Bite Club Grilled Burgers (D'Mall, Boracay)

Bite Club Grilled Burger - Boracay

I may have traveled to Boracay just last June, but my short stay there didn't really allow me to roam around and try different food... so when I traveled back to Boracay last August with my mom and sister, food tripping was something new for me.

For lunch, sister wanted to eat burgers. Finding a place to eat in Boracay is both easy and difficult - easy because there are a lot of food places, difficult because choosing where to eat can be a daunting task. As for sister's burger cravings... we were lucky to have found Bite Club Grilled Burgers while walking along D'Mall.

Bite Club Grilled Burger - Boracay

The place wasn't that big, but because August was an off-peak period, finding a table wasn't difficult. One thing I liked - they had sturdy plastic chairs that allow people with wet clothes to dine in (like we were).

Bite Club Grilled Burgers offer different kinds of patties differentiated by weight. Club Burger is the classic 1/3 pound patty (165 pesos), Burgerella is the 1/3 pound patty stuffed with mozzarella cheese (185 pesos), The Bomb is the classic half pounder (260 pesos), The Bombarella is the half pounder stuffed with mozzarella cheese (280 pesos), and the Triple X is the heavy weight 1 pound patty (420 pesos).

Ordering the burgers were just easy. 1) Choose your patty and 2) Add your choice of topping (all burgers have one free topping... if you want to add more, it will charged 25 pesos per topping). All burgers come with lettuce, tomato, and special Bite Club dressing.

Mom's Burger

Burgerella with Blue Cheese Cream
Sister's burger. I was the one who placed the order and because mom has senior citizen card, her order was placed separately with ours (sister and I). Sister went back to the hotel to change clothes and there might have been a slight misunderstanding because mom and I were served with burger cut in half. We were thinking maybe they saw just mom and I and took the initiative to cut the burger in half thinking we were sharing the burger.

Anyway, the blue cheese cream was divine! It tasted how blue cheese supposed to taste like, and it worked well with the burger.

Sister's Burger

Burgerella with Chunky Mushroom and Cheese
Mom's burger. Beef and mushroom - totally bursting with umami goodness!

My Burger

Burgerella with Cheddar Cheese Cream and Smoked Bacon
My burger. I went with two toppings because I love bacon and I want my burger with a lot of cheese. Each of the burgers (it turned out) came with cheese, so my burger was some kind of cheese bombed burger (do remember that burgerella's patty has mozzarella cheese stuffed inside).

The patty was so delicious!!! It was juicy, it was big, it had a generous mozzarella stuffing, and it tasted like how I like my burger patty should be - smoky, less salt, more of the beef flavor.

Crispy Fries

Crispy Club Fries
For sharing, we had an order of their Crispy Club Fries, after seeing it served at the table in front of us. It was very crispy, but a little chewy as well. I loved it the way it is, but since every table has its own set of condiments, mom and sister mixed their own dip.

Aside from Burgers, the place also offers Breaded Fish Sandwich and Tender Grilled Chicken Sandwich.

Our lunch was foodgasmic! We were glad to have made a great choice this time - with so many food places to choose from it was a blessing to have found this.

Village Tavern Celebrates 1st Year Anniversary with New Menu Offerings

Village Tavern - Bonifacio Global City

Since I am from the north, I am really not familiar with the many food places from the south. So, when I received an invitation to celebrate Village Tavern's first year anniversary, I saw it as a way to have new dining experiences.

Village Tavern - Bonifacio Global City
Village Tavern - Bonifacio Global City Village Tavern - Bonifacio Global City

I loved the ambiance so much! At the middle of the restaurant are tables closely spaced to one another (without really invading the diners' privacy), and surrounding it are tables with couches that feels as if you're dining inside a luxury train.

Chefs at Work

It was also a great sight to see the chefs prepare each order. I personally love restaurants letting diners have a peek into their kitchen because it ensures that all the food are prepared well.

Chips with Salsa

Complimentary Nachos.
I shared the table with Dencio and Cha (Jonel joined us later in the evening), and because we were one of the few early birds, we were served this while waiting for the others. The chips were typical... but the salsa was amazing!

Crispy Clams with Spicy Lemon Dip

Crispy Clams with Spicy Lemon Dip.
This was the first appetizer served to us, and I was glad to have tasted a new way of cooking clams. I usually just eat clams cooked in water and ginger, and nibbling on these babies was just a joy to do. Each clam meat was coated with battered and fried to a crisp, and even if the nibblers were good to eat as is, dipping it in the Spicy Lemon Dip gave it more personality. Since it was quite difficult to eat the clams per piece, what I did was get some of the greens, scooped a tablespoon of the clams added a little of the sauce and mixed it together. Instant salad!

Fully Loaded Romaine Heart

Fully Loaded Romaine Heart.
The romaine lettuce is my favorite among the lettuce I have tasted. Presentation of the salad was really good - it was like Kimchi - the whole romaine heart was cut in half (lengthwise) and each of the leaf layers were drizzled with dressing. Topped with tomatoes, red onions, bacon bits and bleu cheese, it has got to be one of the best salads I have tasted. The bleu cheese is an acquired taste, and although at first I didn't like the taste of eating chunks of bleu cheese, I learned how to like it as I eat my salad.

Roasted Bone Marrow

Roasted Bone Marrow.
Yes, the Pinoys have the Bulalo...but have you eaten bone marrow like this? When this was served to us, not only did our eyes go wide, we also exclaimed some oohs and ahhs... and some wow, too! Chef Josh Boutwood - the corporate chef of the Bistro Group personally came to our table to show us how this should be eaten. First, scoop enough amount of marrow from the bone, spread in on the slice of sourdough bread, then drizzle some apple cider vinegar, sprinkle some sea salt and topped it with herbs. This has got to be one of the most interesting dishes I have tried, though I am not sure I am going to try it again because my cholesterol level is quite high.

Cod Fish

Cod Fish.
On the plate was pan seared Atlantic cod cooked with Spanish chorizo and garlic, served on a bed of salt roasted potato. This (I think) was the first time I ate cod fish (bakalaw in Filipino), and I found it's meat firmer compared to the other white fish I have tried. The fish was lightly seasoned, and is best eaten along with the other components in the dish.

Tomahawk 35oz

Tomahawk 35oz.
Before we were served dinner, we already got to see a picture of this in the printed flip cards on the table. We were sharing some chit-chats hoping we get served this steak, and imagine our surprise when we got to see it personally.

I don't like my meat bloody (I don't eat raw / rare meat), but this kind of steak I love. I don't really care if it's still pinkish inside as long as there's no traces of blood oozing out. I prefer steak cooked like this because the outer layer is firm yet the inside part is still tender. The steak itself tasted good. No need for dips and seasonings, but it tasted great when eaten with the side salad greens.

Lamb Rack

Lamb Rack.
After eating a slightly bland fish and rightly seasoned steak, I found this a bit on the salty side. The lamb was cooked in the same doneness as the steak, and because it was a little salty for my taste, eating it with the creamy mashed potatoes balanced the flavors. It had the typical lamb aftertaste, so I didn't eat a lot of it.

Frozen Lime Souffle

Frozen Lime Souffle.
Ending the wonderful celebration was this dessert. This wasn't love at first taste, but it gets better and better as I ate it. At the bottom of the dish was a layer of frozen lime flavored souffle, which had the slight tang that cleansed the palate. On top of it was the airy lime infused souffle, which was so light that the whole dessert was perfect to eat during summertime. What caught my attention was the candied lime... it didn't have the usual lime zest flavor and it went well with the rest of the dish.

V Tea Hoegaarden Beer
Twinings English Breakfast Tea

We were given our own choice of drinks. My choice was the V Tea. I just wanted something cold and refreshing, and this was the first one I saw. I didn't bother reading the description on the menu so I was surprised when I tasted alcohol in it. The first sip was a bit strong (but it was refreshingly good), and as I let the ice cubes melt, it became better for my liking.

Cha ordered a bottle of Hoegaarden beer, as per friends' suggestion. I still loved the Cerveza Negra better than this one, but tasting a foreign beer brand was a welcomed experience.

Before we left, we all asked for a cup of tea. They don't prepare the tea, by the way... we were served our own cups and little pot of hot water and a saucer of tea and lemon wedge. I don't like the flower infused tea flavor (we were served jasmine and chamomile among the mix), so I went for the English Breakfast Tea, which tasted really good. It wasn't too strong, but not really mild either.

All of the dishes served (except the drinks and the nachos) were new to Village Tavern's menu. As they welcome a new year, they also incorporated new dishes to satisfy both new and regular diners, although they still retained some of the bestsellers. My favorite dish that night was the Tomahawk 35oz and the Fully Loaded Romaine Heart.

By the way, every Wednesdays, Village Tavern offers 50% off on wines by the glass, cocktails, and liquors, so if you fancy some wine and cocktails as part of your dining experience, do drop by during Wednesdays. Happy anniversary, Village Tavern!

Begin Your Cooking Adventure by Making American Pancakes

You love cooking but had never made an effort to cook with your mother around .You want to surprise your partner with good breakfast dish this Sunday. In this case you have to learn more about preparing American pancakes.

What is an American pancake?

An American pancake is a thin layer of cake made from a batter and cooked on low heat in a pan from where it derives its name. American flapcakes can be served with various toppings made from sweet savories like bacon to simple fresh fruits and creams and syrups made from maple sap.

What is the difference between American flapcakes and other pancakes?

Pancakes are usually made from three main ingredients which are flour, eggs and milk. The batter is usually watery and the flapcake are like French crepes. The pancakes might also have dark spots in them which are air bubbles and are very tasty to eat.

American pancakes are also made from eggs, flour and milk. But they use baking powder to make the texture of the pancakes fluffy and soft. The batter used to make the American pancakes is thicker. Americans always eat pancakes for breakfast.

What is the recipe to make delicious American pancakes?

Here is a simple method to prepare delicious American pancakes for breakfast. For the syrup you can use maple syrup that is available in the supermarkets. The basic cooking elements needed to prepare American pancakes are:

135 grams of plain flour

130 ml. milk

1 egg beaten to a fluffy mixture

2 tablespoons sugar

1 tablespoon baking powder

1 pinch of salt

30 grams butter

Here is the actual process of preparing American pancakes.

In a large mixing bowl add the sifted flour with the sugar and salt.

In another bowl add the milk and the egg and mix them to a fluffy consistency.

Introduce the liquid mixture into the flour mixture and beat till there are no lumps in the pancake mixture. The best method is to gently fold in and then beat it up in one direction.

On a warm saucepan heat a small portion of the butter and let it warm on a low heat. The butter should not burn. Add a small quantity of the thick American pancakes batter and spread it in a round circle.

Do not make the pancakes thick. They should be around 1 cm in diameter. Slowly cook one side of the pancake till it's brown and flip the other side. You should not quicken the cooking process and the American flapcake should be lightly browned. If you do quicken it they would become dark brown and bitter.

You can repeat the process until you have used the batter. Before serving you can warm it in an oven.

Serve these warm American flapcake with warm butter coated lavishly over it and add some maple syrup.

You can also add fresh fruits like strawberries and blueberries with cream as side toppings.

Using this American flapcake recipe will surprise your partner. But remember that now that you have started your cooking adventure, cooking regularly would bring you more joy and satisfaction.

Lunch, the Cafe d'Asie Way

Cafe d'Asie - the Bellevue Manila
Second Floor (The Main Wing)
North Bridgeway, Filinvest Corporate City
Alabang, Muntinlupa

*** picture heavy post ***

Sister and I were still quite full from the heavy breakfast we had at Cafe d'Asie, but around 11:30am, we already made our way to the cafe for our lunch because we needed to leave the hotel by 1pm just so my sister won't be late for work. We already knew how good the breakfast buffet was, and even if we knew we were in for a treat, we were still surprised at the food spread we had that day.

Appetizers Station

Appetizers Section. Quite a lot of mix for different types of people, and although I am not much into appetizers, I did take about three pieces of those prawns because I just can't resist it!

Salad Station

Salad Station. Some people do start their meal with salads, but not me. :) I did taste that rice salad (right side of the picture), and it was good!

Pasta Station

Pasta Station. That time, they offer three types of pasta (fettucine, fusili, and ziti) with three types of sauces (pesto, carbonara, and bolognese) - just tell the cook your choice of pasta and sauce, and they'll prepare it for you. I didn't go for pasta, but sister went for fusili carbonara.

Japanese Station
Salad and Japanese Station

Japanese Station. Something I was thankful for because I am starting to love sushi! I tasted three types of sushi and my favorite was the one with fish toppings. They also offer sashimi, but I don't eat raw meat. Sister tasted the salmon sashimi and she loved it! She said the fish was sweet and firm and just delicious.

Mongolian Station

Mongolian Station. I still haven't tasted Mongolian, but I skipped this because I thought it might be kinda heavy for the tummy.

Fresh Seafood Meats
Grilled Lamb with Mint Jelly

Meat Station. The meats aren't there for display - diners can actually ask the cook to cook it for them - their choice of dish. The fish can be cooked into sinigang or fried or grilled. I asked one cut of lamb to be grilled (medium well) and it was great. The mint jelly that came with it was a good compliment.

Tempura and Breaded Calamari

Tempura and Calamari. My heart skipped a bit when I saw this because tempura has been my biggest craving since then. If you want the freshest tempura and calamari, there's a cook on standby ready to fry these babies for you.

Roasted US Prime Rib

Roasted US Prime Rib. Probably the star of the buffet. This made our eyes go wide because we don't really see steaks being offered on a buffet (well, we didn't go to that much buffet, but I guess you get my point). There's a carver on standby to assist you - you can go as thin or as thick as you can, and I just asked for a thin slice just so I could taste it. There were three sauces available, and among the three it was the Peppercorn Sauce that I loved.

Goat Kaldereta

Filipino Station. They may offer International cuisine, but of course, they do have Filipino dishes as well. They had different dishes, but this Kalderetang Kambing caught my attention the most.

Pastry Station Pastry Station
Pastry Station Pastry Station
Chocolate Station

Desserts Station. They had a lot of bite-size cakes, tarts, and other kinds of pastries, but they also had chocolates, ice cream (Arce Dairy), and a little Halo-Halo station. I took three kinds of cakes and a small cup of ice cream. Delish!

Ripe Mango Shake Watermelon Shake

Our Drinks. Sister had ripe mango shake, I had Watermelon shake. Both tasted good and both are so refreshing! Aside from the fruit shakes, they also offer fruit juices, coffee, and tea.

Had we had more time, we probably stayed longer and ate more, but because we were pressed for time, we just made sure that what we ate where the ones we really wanted to eat. Big thanks to the Bellevue Manila for this awesome food trip. Our stay at the hotel was something we will never forget.

When was the last time you went for a buffet-style dining?
