Modern Shanghai - Glorietta 2, p1

Chinese food may have been part of our rich culinary heritage, but even if we eat Chinese food every now and then, there are still many flavors to discover.

Modern Shanghai - Glorietta 2

Last week, I was privileged to dine at one of the newest Chinese restaurant in the Metro - Modern Shanghai in Glorietta 2. This restaurant opened just last May, but this isn't the first branch here in the Philippines, the first one is located in SM Mall of Asia.

I guess part of being "modern" is not having the traditional red and gold motif, but even if it's modern, they still have a few round tables with lazy susan for big groups. The restaurant is spacious and the minimal decoration is simply beautiful. The seats are also comfortable.

For a new restaurant, their menu is quite extensive, and I liked that the menu has a picture of every dish they offer, but of course, the restaurant staff is there to answer every queries about the dishes. Even with the extensive menu, they recently added ten new dishes, which I will share next time, just to cut a very long post. For today, let me just share a little "appetizer."

Shandong Style Shredded Chicken

Shandong Style Shredded Chicken
This reminds me of the Hainanese Chicken, but it tasted different, of course. The meat was very tender and the skin had a very light crisp to it. It came with a dipping sauce - slightly sweet soy sauce - but the meat was already tasty enough that it didn't need the dipping sauce just much.

Tea Time! Lotus Bloom Tea
Mango Tea Sangria Oolong Tea

Modern Shanghai offers different kinds of drinks, too. One of our companions had the Mango Tea Sangria (lower left picture)- a very fruity chunky drink, while my brother and i opted for the hot tea. He went for the Oolong Tea (lower right picture), while I went for the Lotus Bloom. It was such an interesting tea, with a very interesting taste, too. It had a mild sweetness to it and it smelled good.

One of our companions had the Apple Shake, which tasted just fine... but what I loved about their drinks is that it just didn't come with one serving. Meaning, my tea is pretty much bottomless - they would offer to refill my cup with hot water as soon as they see that my cup only had 1/4 of tea left;  my brother was served with one pitcher of Oolong Tea, while our friend who ordered the Apple Shake was also served one pitcher of the shake.

Hand Pulled Noodles

Outside the restaurant is a window where you can watch how they do the hand pulled noodles - very interesting to watch!

Tomorrow I will share the first five new dishes being offered at Modern Shanghai.

Chicken Parmigiana Pizza by Angel's Pizza Pasta Combo

Rainy days and Mondays get you down? Angel's Pizza Pasta Combo gives you three reasons to cheer up.

Chicken Parmigiana Pizza (Hand Rolled Crust)
Chicken Parmigiana Pizza - Hand Tossed
Chicken Parmigiana Pizza (Thin Crust)
Chicken Parmigiana Pizza - Thin Crust
Number 1 - New Pizza Flavor
Starting today, 15 July 2013, you can now avail of their newest flavor - Chicken Parmigiana.

Available in Medium (9"), Family (12"), and Big Family (14") sizes, the Chicken Parmigiana Pizza has slices of marinated chicken, green bell peppers, and tomatoes in Culinary Cream sauce and two kinds of cheeses - Cheddar and Mozzarella. You may opt for the thin crust or the hand-tossed dough for this flavor, but if you ask me, the hand-tossed crust tasted better because the crust has a chewy-soft texture and tasted a little like pan de sal. This was the first time I got to taste pizza in cream sauce as I usually get to eat pizza with tomato sauce, and I must say this was a great tasting flavor. The toppings cut the richness of the cream and the cheeses, and because I drizzled my pizza with hot sauce, it made the pizza more flavorful. Cream and spice went well together.

Angel's Pizza Club Card

Number 2 - Angel's Pizza Club Card
You can now also avail of their Angel's Pizza Club Card for only 299 pesos, which gives you a full year of perks including:
  • Buy 1 pizza Take 1 pizza free any time, any day (available only for Family and Big Family sizes only)
  • 25% discount on all pizza purchase
  • Free 1 medium pizza (Angel's Aloha or Angel's Bacon & Cheese) on your birthday.
Of course, there are terms to this, just feel free to ask any staff once you visit the store.

Collect all 10 Stickers

Number 3 - Free Globe Tattoo Sonic Stick
Internet truly has been a part of our everyday lives, but not every establishment has free WiFi, and not all cell phone users avail of the internet service their network provides. That applies to me - I am quite a WiFi dependent kind of user, that's why when I went on a holiday some years ago, I actually borrowed an Internet stick, just to make sure I am still connected even if there is no WiFi where I went. I am not sure just how much this Internet Stick cost, but here's a chance to get one for free, while still enjoying pizza and pasta from Angel's Pizza Pasta Combo.

For every 600 pesos worth of pizza + Globe products, you get to earn one sticker. Collect all 10 stickers and you can then claim for your free Globe Tattoo Sonic Stick. A big family sized pizza cost around 491 pesos to 647 pesos depending on the flavor. Considering you buy a big family sized Chicken Parmigiana Pizza at 599 pesos, you can then combine it with any Globe products (have your phone loaded with Globe credits) to make it 600 pesos or more. Now, if you are hosting a very big party and you're going to buy 10 pizzas, have it on 10 different transactions, because you can only get 1 sticker per single transaction. Meaning, even if you have a total bill of 6000 pesos, if it's only on single receipt, you can only receive one sticker.

Angels Pizza Pasta Combo has branches in Kalayaan (Quezon City), Makati, Eton Cyberpod, Granada (Quezon City), Fairview, Dagupan, Malate, Paranaque, and Recto. For deliveries, you may call their hotline at 922-2222, but soon they will launch their online delivery website. No word on that yet... but you may take note of the site and check it every now and then. For updates and more information, visit their Facebook Page, and follow them on Twitter and/or Instagram.

Moonleaf Tea Shop Celebrates 1st Anniversary

Hello fellow foodies! I'm back!
Well, I actually came home last week, but with so many things to do, I decided to update this blog this week.

Last Friday, despite having flu symptoms, I spent my first weekend night with my siblings and fellow blogger friends at Moonleaf Tea Shop in Makati City, which is also celebrating their first year anniversary by showcasing OPM Talents via Moonleaf Beats.

Anyô

First to hit the stage was Anyô, an up and coming band. They performed songs from their debut album, "Breathe" as well as covers of few popular songs. I was very impressed with this band, that I actually downloaded their debut album and is listening to it while typing this post. Their debut album is available for free download (yes, the band decided their first studio album to be given for free) thru their website, anyomusic.com.

AI dela Cruz and LM Cancio

Next to perform were AI Dela Cruz and LM Cancio. I got to see AI (read: Ah-yee) at another event, but didn't know she has a very great voice. She and LM serenaded the crowd with mostly cover songs (their cover of Christina Perri's "A Thousand Years" was so awesome), but I think they performed an original song, too.

Ebe Dancel
Ebe Dancel

The night's main event had to be the performance by Ebe Dancel. I actually had to say a silent apology for not knowing him right away (I admit I seldom listen to radio since college days), but when the hosts (AI and Marvin) said that he was the former frontman for the band Sugarfree, I sighed a relief. The band Sugarfree is familiar to me, but band members' names aren't. Anyway, he performed song after song... and it was indeed a great musical ride.

Lasagna Moonleaf Beats

Between song sets, there were raffles - some won Moonleaf Tea Shop GCs, others won food goodies from The Sweet Studio. My brother won some GCs, while my sister won a lasagna gift pack. Congrats to them! :) All throughout the night, there were surprise treats including discounted tea drinks and free add-ons (nata, pudding, tapioca pearls, and aloe vera), and I got to have two cups of drink - my favorite Passionfruit Yakult with Nata and Aloe Vera as well as a cup of Earl Grey Milk Tea with Nata. I also had chicken turnover, some French macarons, and brownie bites. We were also given eco-friendly bookmarks - something I am so grateful for because I am now a self-confessed bookworm.

Hitting their first year mark, Moonleaf Tea Shop is constantly thinking of new ways to reach to the market, and soon they will be serving hot tea drinks - something to look forward to, because as much as I love cold drinks, sometimes I truly want to sip hot tea instead.

For more updates, do check their Facebook Page. A list of Moonleaf Tea Shop stores can be accessed through this link.

Happy anniversary, Moonleaf Tea Shop! Here's to more years of tea goodness!

Menu Plan Monday: Week of June 24th, 2013 (Dinners on Vacation)

Hey guys!!!  I have been working like a madwoman.  Suffering though the 100 days of hell in the Flower Business.

So the family and I are on vacation at the moment.  We are in a gorgeous cabin on the Great Smokey Mountains.  It is so incredible here.  The views are breath taking.  So...... How does Paleo Celiacs go on vacation and eat?   I did find and call a few restaurants but my big plan is the crockpot.  Yes, I have actually gone on vacation with my crockpot AND my Kruig.  LOL.  I have adapted a few of my favorite recipes on the web to be crock pot worthy.  It's not difficult really, just prep and cook in the crock instead of oven, stove top, etc.  Early in the morning, after breakfast, I plan to just toss that meal in and eat a safe dinner back at the cabin.

Paleo Angel Food Cake

This Paleo Angel Food cake is not white like your Standard version because Coconut flour is slightly yellow.  If you are not a fan of Coconut Flour, don't worry.  I promise you, you won't taste it in there.  The coconut flour allows for the added protein and keeps this traditionally DRY cake very moist.  Plus, the Arrowroot is a starch which I traditionally like to stay away from while trying to loose weight.  I feel like the extra protein helps balance that a bit. It's ok, just close your eyes and taste it.  The texture is a dead ringer for the original version.  The honey gives it a slightly different flavor than the sugar would have but we just LOVED it.  It was sweet enough, it was spongey enough.  It's very addicting so be warned!!!  Top with Strawberry and Whipped Coconut Cream!!!

3/4 cup Arrowroot Powder
1/4 cup Coconut Flour

12 egg whites (about 1-1/2 cup)
1-1/2 teaspoon Cream of Tartar
1 teaspoon Baking Soda
1/4 teaspoon Salt
1-1/2 teaspoon Pure Vanilla
1/4 teaspoon Pure Almond Extract (optional)
1/2 cup Honey

  • Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
  • Before you start, it's a good idea to whipe down your bowls and tube pan with a touch of vinegar on a paper towel. It will eliminate any grease, which could interfere with the egg whites' ability to rise. That's a Julia Child trick.
  • In a bowl, thoroughly combine Arrowroot, Coconut Flour. Get out your sifter and sift dry ingredients.  Set aside.
  • In a separate bowl, beat the egg whites until they start to foam. Add the cream of tartar, baking soda, salt, almond and vanilla extracts. Continue to beat until just about stiff peaks form. Slowly drizzle in the honey in a slow stream.
  • Turn off beaters and set bowl aside. With a spatula, gently fold the dry ingredients into the egg whites, taking great care not to deflate the whites. You can not do this in the mixer, it WILL deflate your egg whites.  Folding is the only way you can mix in the dry ingredients.
  • Spoon the batter into an ungreased tube pan. Slice a butter knife through the batter several times in order to get it distributed in the pan, then smooth the top.
  • Bake in a 325 degree (F) oven for an hour. Invert the pan (angel food cake pans have legs to allow this, if you are using something else, you may want to set up on something to serve as feet. (this helps to keep it from collapsing).
